Sensory Play

What is Sensory Play?

Sensory play is a type of play that is very beneficial for children which enhances learning through hands-on activities that stimulate the child’s senses. Starting at birth, babies begin to explore the world around them using their five senses. As children grow, their senses are their most familiar and most basic way to explore and process new information. This is a great way for children to explore the world they live in.

Benefits of Sensory Play

  •  Strengthening Fine and Gross Motor Skills:

Children work on building up their fine motor skills and coordination when they manipulate different sensory materials.

  • Enhancing self-esteem:

Sensory play offers kids the opportunity for self-expression because there is no right answer and children feel safe to change or experiment with what they are doing.

  • Language Development:

Experimenting with language and descriptive words especially when playing with others.

  • Improving Social Skills:

Practicing negotiation skills, turn taking and sharing, provides opportunities for working out problems and experimenting with solutions.

  • Imagination and Creative Play:

Sensory mediums can act as a canvas for a child’s imagination. Play dough for example can become a flower, a ball, a person, a scene

  •  Calming effect:

Sensory play is great for calming an anxious or frustrated child
